What are composite veneers?

Composite veneers involve sculpting and bonding composite filling material to teeth to improve their appearance. We can  fill gaps, lengthen and shorten teeth, reshape crooked or malformed teeth, cover staining, and change tooth colour. There is often no drilling, maximum tooth preservation, the process is reversible, repairable, and completed in a single dental visit. I’m told I began grinding my teeth around the time they began to arrive. Sadly, it was a habit I never got to shake and as a result I have spent most of my life smiling without showing my teeth, with my hand over my mouth, or turning my head when I noticed people looking at my mouth. However, I now have a reason to show off my smile. Richard recommended I rebuild the teeth with bonded composite veneers. He explained the process in detail, let me make up my mind in my own time and when I decided to go ahead with the procedure, he and his amazing team did everything to make me feel informed and comfortable while I was in the chair. It went exactly as he had described, and his lovely sense of humour made the treatment time fly by. It was absolutely painless and uneventful and I highly recommend Richard and this procedure.

Repairing stained, hypomineralised teeth

BEFORE: These upper and lower teeth failed to develop properly leading to brown staining. The teeth also have some old stained composites that needed replacement.
AFTER: The old composites were removed with a small amount of the badly stained tooth. The teeth were reshaped and veneered with a lighter shade of composite to look fantastic.

Building up worn, spaced teeth

BEFORE: What is not so clear in the photo is how thin the edge of these front teeth was due to wear and tooth grinding.
AFTER: Composite veneers were added to the inside and outside of the front teeth to build up the wear, lengthen the incisors and close the spaces between the teeth.

Combining composite veneers with tooth whitening

1. This patient presented with stained, spaced and worn teeth.
2. The patient was only concerned about the gaps on the upper teeth.
3. After pre-treatment tooth whitening on the upper and lower teeth, we built up the wear and closed the spaces on the upper teeth, matching the new tooth shade.
4. This photo was taken straight after treatment. The patient still had a numb lip and so this was the best smile he could manage. But rest assured he was happy!

Building up short teeth

BEFORE: This patient was concerned about her small lateral incisor teeth, but happy with the colour.
AFTER: We lengthened the lateral incisor teeth with a composite shade to match. then we reshaped the canine teeth, filling in the front corner to make them softer.

Changing tooth length and angulation 

1. This patient had worn front teeth but also the upper lateral incisors were angled inwards slightly.
2. The patient was happy with her lower teeth as they are not very visible in her smile.
3. The central incisors were lenthened and the lateral incisors 'uprighted' cosmetically to look straighter.
4. We were also able to extend the composite veneer up the front of the tooth, improving the shade and making them lighter.

Combining composite veneers with a resin bonded bridge

BEFORE: Here we have heavily worn teeth with a two missin glower incisors. The patient was happy with the shade of his teeth but wanted an affordable solution.
AFTER: The incisal edge of the upper four teeth was restored with composite veneers and the lower incisor teeth were replaced with a resin bonded bridge.

Restoring the length of worn teeth

BEFORE: Over time this patient had worn down her natural front teeth, but the adjacent crowns on her top left had remained the same length. Porcelain is harder than teeth.
AFTER: The worn teeth were built down to their original lengh and lightened. We did not match the colour to the old crowns, as they look artificial and will be replaced in the future.

Closing spaces, correcting tooth angulation & restoring wear

BEFORE: This patient had a little of everything. Wear on the teeth edges, slight angulation issues and spaces between teeth.
AFTER: In one visit we closed the spaces, restored the wear and made the teeth appear straighter. A lot easier than several months of orthodontics!

Restoring heavily filled teeth with composite veneers instead of crowns

BEFORE: These front teeth had a history of heavy decay and were very heavily filled with old composite fillings that had reached the end of their life. 
AFTER: Many dentists would suggest crowning these front teeth. But this would involve cutting tooth away. Five composite veneers saved tooth and saved the patient about $5500!

Reshaping teeth and closing spaces

BEFORE: In this case we needed to close several spaces on both sides of the central incisors, as well as straightening the edge of teh four front teeth.
AFTER: We increased the width and length of the four front teeth, and built up the front of the canines. Maintaining the correct width:height ratio is vital to get the best aesthetics.

Combining composite veneers with a partial denture

BEFORE: This was another person with heavily restored teeth, but also missing upper teeth on both sides.
AFTER: Treatment involved rebuilding all the natural teeth with composite veneers and replacing the missing back teeth with a plastic partial denture. A smile transformed!

Making small teeth larger

BEFORE: This young woman had quite small, square and short teeth, mainly from heavy tooth grinding.
AFTER: Composite veneers were used to lengthen and widen the teeth to a more aesthetic proportion. She also had to wear a bite splint at night to prevent her from wearing down the veneers as she had her teeth.

Rebuilding worn and eroded teeth

BEFORE: This patient had worn the edge of his teeth with tooth grinding, but also the fronts of the teeth from erosion.
AFTER: We were able to extend the veneers right up the front of the teeth to protect the eroded surfaces and cover the darker, stained tooth underneath. And we got a little bit more of a smile!

Building up worn teeth

BEFORE: Composite veneers are great for these cases, where the only problem is wear of the tooth edge. Any other solutions such as crowns would involve cutting healthy tooth away. 
AFTER: The front teeth are restored to their natural proportions without the need for any drilling. The patient's smile says it all.
